Head’s up: Tonight’s reading is a little shorter than usual, but packs a punch. I hope you enjoy it.

Mark tells us a story about people dropping their money into a treasury at the temple.

Jesus sat across and watched many rich people putting in large sums.

A poor widow put in two tiny coins (or mites/ lepta) “worth very little” (Mark 12:42, CSB).

A lepton is a thin bronze coin that is low in value. It’s less than one US dollar.

I have a jar full of coins that are sealed and never spent.

They are a collector’s item.

Mine are covered in dust, but hers didn’t have a chance to.

“This poor widow has put in more than all of them,” says Jesus (Luke 21:3).

“For all these people have put in gifts out of their surplus, but she out of her poverty has put in all she had to live on” (v. 4).

It was less than a dollar but more than all of the rest.

Because it was from her heart.

Does my gift come from a bank account or a generous heart?

Mine are easy to give, hers were not.

It was “everything she had” (Mark 12:44a).

Jesus, you see what I have and the value in it. I want it to actually be a gift to you. Make it easy for me to give like the widow.
