Story

The book of 1 Samuel tells us a story about Hannah, a wife of Elkanah.

She was childless but very much loved.

It still hurt.

She would weep to the Lord “with many tears” (1 Samuel 1:10b, CSB).

She asked, “if you will take notice of your servant’s affliction … and give your servant a son, I will give him to the Lord all the days of his life…” (v. 11).

She wanted to be a mother that would give him back.

It was a quiet request between her and the Lord.

“Though her lips were moving, her voice could not be heard” (v. 13).

“Eli thought she was drunk and said to her, ‘How long are you going to be drunk? Get rid of your wine!’” (v. 13b-14).

Hannah was not a drunk woman.

She replied, “I am a woman with a broken heart” (v. 15a).

Her heart was broken, but it was no longer alone.

Her request came true.

She conceived and gave birth to a son.

“Since the Lord gave me what I asked for, I now give the boy to the Lord” (v. 27b-28a).

Prayer

God, you love me too much to see me hurt. I want you to see me when I have a broken heart and when I don’t. I will live my life for you because it’s from you.

In Jesus’ name, amen.

Until next week — Aiden
